SHORT-TOED SNAKE EAGLE

Circaetus gallicus
Culebrera europea
English: Short-toed-Eagle.
German: Schlangenadler.
French: Circaète Jean-le-Blanc.
Order: Falconiformes.
Family: Accipitridae.
62-69 cm.
160-175 cm.
The Short-toed-Eagle stands out from other Iberian raptors thanks to its yellow eyes and its scaly, featherless legs in shades of gray/bluish.
Feathers are not a variable to be considered for sexing this species.
It is possible to recognize 4 different ages:

Juvenile specimen: these individuals have new feathers, that is, without molt limits. The wing lacks the subterminal band of gray tones. The secondaries have very poorly marked bands and all the bands of the central rectrices have the same width.

2nd year specimen: they have a completely juvenile plumage in spring before the molt, so it will apparently be quite worn. During the autumn months, these individuals appear with two generations of feathers (juvenile feathers in brown tones and very worn that contrast with the newer ones with darker colors).

3rd year specimen: these specimens can be identified as long as they retain some juvenile flight feathers. In that case, the retained juvenile secondaries are clearer and with poorly marked bands.

Adult specimen: these individuals have several generations of feathers, all of them adult type. The bands of the secondaries are wide and well defined, with the subterminal being the widest. On the other hand, the bands of the central rectrices have a different width, with the last one being the widest. The number of bars of the rectrices can change depending on the individual and the stage it is going through.
Short-toed-Eagle have an incomplete post-nuptial molt that takes place between the months of May and October, since they do not replace all the flight feathers and rectrices in one year. On the other hand, the post-juvenile molt does not start until the spring of the 2nd year, leaving some outer primaries and central secondaries unchanged.
Primaries: 10 per wing.
Secundaries: 14-16 per wing.
Rectrices: 12.
