FIRECREST

Regulus ignicapilla
reyezuelo listado
English: Firecrest.
German: Sommergoldhähnchen.
French: Roitelet triple-bandeau.
Order: Passeriformes.
Family: Regulidae.
It can be confused with the Goldcrest. The Goldcrest lacks a white eyebrow and the black eye stripe.
The adult male has an orangish crown with yellow edges. The upper part of the back is bathed in bright yellow-green. On the other hand, the female has a less intense yellow crown, sometimes with some orange. The upper part of the back is usually a dull yellow-green. Juvenile individuals cannot be sexed based on plumage pattern.
It is possible to recognize 3 different ages:

Juvenile specimen: They lack the typical and recognizable “crown” on the crown. They have a fresh plumage.

1st/2nd-year specimen: They have not molted a significant portion of the wing feathers (thus showing wear). If the central alula is not molted, it lacks a green edge. The rectrices are very pointed, although their shape is not always a reliable characteristic due to overlapping.

Adult specimen: The central feather of the alula has a green edge. The rectrices range from slightly pointed to rounded, although the shape of the tail feathers is not always reliable due to overlapping.
Firecrests undergo a complete postnuptial molt, which generally finishes in September. On the other hand, the post-juvenile molt is a partial process and includes body feathers, lesser and median coverts, and some greater infracoverts. Some individuals change some or all of their tertials. This process usually finishes in September.
Primaries: 10 per wing.
Secundaries: 9 per wing.
Rectrices: 12.
