BOOTED EAGLE

Hieraaetus pennatus
English: Booted Eagle.
German: Zwergadler.
French: Aigle botté.
Order: Accipitriformes.
Family: Accipitridae.
42-51 cm.
110-135 cm.
Booted Eagle is easily recognizable due to its feathered tarsi and its intense yellow legs.
There are no notable differences in plumage between male and female, so sexing cannot be done using this variable.
It is possible to recognize 4 different ages:

Juvenile specimen: it has a new generation plumage with no apparent wear. The secondary and the rectrices are dark brown and the striping is barely distinguishable. There is a marked edge in ante tones on the flight feathers.

2nd Year specimens: during the spring, the plumage is of the juvenile generation but with a well-marked wear. During the autumn, they present a mix of juvenile generation feathers and adult generation feathers in the primaries, secondaries and rectrices.

3rd Year specimens: this stage is only recognizable in some specimens that have retained some of the outer primaries and some central secondaries of the juvenile generation, so they will be very worn.

Adult specimen: the secondaries and rectrices are dark brown with a pronounced striping. The flight feathers, in the months with great wear, look almost without an edge in ante tones.
Booted Eagles perform a complete post-nuptial molt that usually begins in May. This process is suspended during the migration period and is completed in the wintering areas. The post-juvenile molt begins in the 2nd year of life.
Primaries: 10 per wing.
Secundaries: 15-16 per wing.
Rectrices: 12.
